Open access for books

Books are an important publication format across several academic disciplines. According to the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions' (SUHF) Roadmap for Open Science and the national guidelines, all forms of scholarly publication, including monographs and book chapters, should be published with open access. We have gathered information on different pathways for publishing open access monographs and book chapters.

How about funding?

Book publishing is associated with a  range of costs, including manuscript preparation, peer review, editorial work, typesetting, design and marketing. While there are no established funding and distribution models for open-access books comparable to those available for journal articles, costs associated with book publishing typically are covered through research grants or by securing dedicated funding from research funders, foundations, and other funding bodies,

What OA-requirements do the funders have?

Some funders have clear open access requirements that include monographs and book chapters. Other research funders do not require books to be published open access, but they encourage researchers to make them openly available whenever possible.
