How do I publish an open access book with publishing fees?

Costs associated with book publishing are typically covered through research grants or by securing dedicated funding from research funders, foundations, and other funding bodies. This is due to the lack of established funding and distribution models for open-access books comparable to those available for journal articles. Here, we have compiled information on open-access publishing models and publication charges for monographs and book chapters.

What OA options are there?

Large international scholarly publishers often offer the option of publishing a monograph or a book chapter open access in exchange for a publication fee, known as a Book Processing Charge (BPC) or Chapter Processing Charge (CPC).  For monographs it is gold OA, for chapters it can be either gold, if the whole book is open, or hybrid, if just part of the chapters are open access. This is a costly OA publishing model, and funding usually needs to be sought from external sources.

Self archiving, also known as parallel publishing or green OA, is typically by these publishers permitted only for an individual book chapter rather than the entire monograph, and usually only after an embargo period imposed by the publisher.

How much are the publishing fees?

Monographs approximately costs €10,000–€17,000 or £10,000–£13,000, depending on the publisher. and book chapters: approximately €1,100–€2,390 or £1,100–£2,035.
